12 Pieces of advice to optimize the fuel consumption and save money

1- Plan the route looking for less crowded highways.
2- Avoid unnecessary overloads of the vehicle.
3- Use the air conditioned only when it is necessary. The use of the air conditioned increases the fuel consumption up to a 20%.
4- Keep the windows closed. Open windows increase the air resistance, therefore increasing the consumption.
5- Use the engine oil specified by the manufacturer of the vehicle. Using the worn engine oil may increase the friction in the interior of the engine provoking and higher ware and diminishing the efficiency in the consumption of up to a 2%.
6- Revise the vehicle's documents periodically so that when it is necessary, take pertinent actions appropriately.
7- Keep the tires with the adequate pressure (the one recommended by the manufacturer). Tires with a higher pressure to the recommended one may put at risk your safety and diminish the tires' useful life. Tires with a lower pressure to the recommended generate a higher friction affecting negatively the fuel consumption. Keeping the tires with the correct pressure by means of periodical checking may save up to a 3% in the fuel consumption.
8- Keep the vehicle well tuned. The spark plugs wear away, the filters obstruct and the injectors get dirty. If these pieces are not replaced or cleaned periodically the fuel consumption may increase in an important way. A vehicle that is not tuned adequately consumes 4% more fuel. An obstructed air filter may increase the fuel consumption up to a 10%.
9- Start the engine without accelerating and start to move as soon as possible.
10- Avoid very high speed. Driving at high speeds affects in a negative way the fuel consumption and this increases dramatically above the 100 kilometers per hour. If you drive at moderate speed you will save between a 7% and a 23% of fuel.
11- Drive peacefully and carefully. Driving at high speeds, accelerating and stopping suddenly wastes around a 33% of fuel in the highway and a 5% in the city.
12- Avoid keeping the vehicle on when you are not moving. If it is necessary to heat the engine do it in a low speed but not stopped.
